Rent Strike in Sunset Park, Brooklyn

by ISH of Occupy Sunset Park on July 27, 2012

First published here.

My local Occupy group, Occupy/Ocupemos Sunset Park, has been immersed in a local struggle, a rent strike in a series of buildings on 46th street in this Brooklyn neighborhood. Here are some of the flyers we’ve been producing for the actions.

The strike has been receiving terrific media coverage and terrific support from the Occupy network. I will be back in the next few days with a post to detail what’s been happening and put the struggle in context.

The first action ended with an impromptu hour-long occupation of state assemblyman Felix Ortiz’s office, which was truly awesome. Tonight, see the last flyer below, we’re staging a sidewalk sleep-in and people’s inspection of the buildings.

The video below was taken at the first action; it sums up what was happening at the beginning. Yours truly is interviewed at length toward the end. Enjoy.

A terrific account of the strike with interviews with many of the rent strikers can be found here: “Brooklyn Women Make Their Building Theirs.”

Something big is happening in Sunset Park. Tenants are demanding liveable conditions and a response to the 400 documented housing violations in their building. For years residents in these three buildings have been living in fear of fires, electrical blackouts and disease-triggering agents like mold, cockroaches and rats. Despite numerous complaints made to city agencies and politicians’ offices, these violations continue to threaten the lives of dozens of residents.

All over New York City, landlords like Orazio Petito are trying to displace residents from their homes because they can gentrify the buildings and raise rent. Read more about how this courageous community is standing up to defend their home.

Occupy Sunset Park asks you to join them to show ongoing support for the rent strikers by stopping by for a nightly vigil from 6pm to 7pm on 46th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, near the R train at 45th St.

Thanks for picking this up, Binh.

The 46th Street Rent Strikers are in it for the long haul. It’s up to us supporters to keep momentum going.

At Saturday’s Occupy Sunset Park General Assembly (10AM, La Casita, 414 45th Street, Brooklyn), we will be brainstorming ways to keep the vigils going. If there’s not a crowd of 20 people there everyday, 2 people with signs reminding the tenants they’re not forgotten is still worth it. This struggle and the uncertainty of living in a neglected building is hugely stressful for the tenants; let’s share the burden.

You might also want to watch this intense video: We’ve been doing some copwatch in the neighborhood and here one of our members captured an unbelievably brutal episode of Stop and Frisk in the subway just downstairs from La Casita where we meet.

“Sunset Park, Queens”? Is there a separate rent strike in Queens, or should that read “Sunset Park, Brooklyn”?

As the fastest insects in the world, they can also breed
rapidly. Knowing the difference between ech of these pests
cann make it a lot easier to know how to treat the probloem when faced with one.

You need to immediately get rid of cockroaches once you
see one.

This “collegial” decision making allows the herd of roaches to congregate in self-defensive
masses to their mutual benefit. Many people become upset when they discover insects in their homes.
But again, they do not prevent other pests from entering your home.

They won’t exactly pile up if they see a lot of dead roaches.

For more discussion of this topic, check the link below:.
An important note to remember is that sometimes they make it inside your
home and die belly up.

The soapy water does noot have a residual effect, so reapply often, especially after rain or
watering. Lots of people assume they need to choose an exterminator, especially for problems like roaches in house walls.
Keep kitchen appliances such as toasters, toaster ovens, microwaves, stoves,
ovens, and refrigerators free of crumbs and other food debris.

Andd this does nnot merely include food that is waiting to
be eaten; improperly stored leftovers and garbqge all contribute to the environment that cockroaches find most appealing.

Cockroaches are known to carry diseases, germs and bacteria and have also
been linked to asthma and allergies. It is quite a relief for most people living in Houston to know
that the rates to get rid of pests are not usually at all too high.
