The following is a Q & A with Joe Manchik, Green Party candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Ohio’s 12th Congressional District.

TNS: How long have you’ve lived in Ohio?

I moved to Ohio after I graduated from high school in Michigan to attend college at the Ohio Institute of Technology in 1971 and have been living in Ohio ever since then. I have also lived in Ohio’s 12th Congressional district since 1983.

TNS: How did you come to join the green party of Ohio?

I first joined the Green Party when I voted for Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader in 1996 and have always voted for Green Party candidates running for office ever since. I first came to know of Ralph Nader and gained a lot of respect for this man when he took on the giant manufacturing corporation General Motors in the 1960s over the “Unsafe At Any Speed” Chevrolet Corvair automobile and have been following him ever since. I was proud to vote for Ralph Nader when I had the opportunity to do so in 1996 and I am still proud of that decision today.

TNS: What is it about the RepubliCrats or the corporate duopoly that really boils your blood?

What REALLY bothers me about the corrupt, corporate-capitalist and corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party cabal of evil and greed and wars for oil is just that. America’s ugly wars for oil is what truly bothers me more than anything. Both political parties no longer represent the American people. They always work in unison and they only represent the multinational corporations that OWN them. These are multinational military industrial contractors and multinational oil corporations that get BILLIONS of OUR tax dollars to finance and manufacture the weapons of war and BILLIONS of petrodollars by stealing the oil and the gas from the innocent victims of the nations that the United States occupies. The American people do NOT want our corrupt and out of control American government invading sovereign nations and murdering and displacing their citizens, in order to increase the corporate profits of these multinational corporations. But that is EXACTLY what the corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party in power in Washington is doing today.  These multinational corporations have taken over the government of the United States in a corporate coup d’etat and they are now running our out of control American government today for their own corporate profits, and this is truly SHAMEFUL!

TNS: You’ve stated that you’re truly ashamed of the United States. Why is that?

Many nations and many people throughout the world view the United States of America as a terrorist organization today, and sadly they are indeed correct. George W. Bush and Barack Obama have turned our corrupt and out of control American government into the most powerful and the most evil terrorist organization the world has ever known.  Just click on this link and you will see what I mean: http://drones.pitchinteractive.com/  It truly saddened me when I first saw this website and it saddens me every time I look at it.

TNS: How hard has it been for you to get on the ballot?

Since the Green Party has ballot access in Ohio today, it was relatively easy for me to get on the ballot to run for the United States House of Representatives. This was made possible because Anita

Rios ran as the Green Party candidate for Governor in Ohio in 2014 and got more than 100,000 votes, giving the Green Party the same status as that of a political party with ballot access equal to that of the Democratic and Republican parties today.

TNS: On March 15 you will be involved with a primary election. How does it work for Greens and other third party candidates in the state of Ohio?

Ohio is a state with closed primary elections, meaning you can only vote for the candidates running with the political party in which you declare your political affiliation. In Ohio, the Board of Elections only allows voters to declare their political affiliation every two years when they vote in the primary elections. One of the challenges for the Green Party of Ohio today is to build the Green Party and make it into a stronger political party by getting more voters to declare their political affiliation as a member of the Green Party by voting for the several Green Party candidates running for office in the primary election on March 15, instead of voting for the Democrats or Republicans, in order to retain and maintain the ballot access that the Green Party has fought so very hard to obtain and currently enjoys in Ohio today. This is one of many reasons why I am running for congress today, to help build the Green Party of Ohio, but I am also in it to win it.

TNS: What do you think the Green Party could do nationally about helping to get candidates like yourself, on the ballot?

By running presidential candidates every four years, the Green Party of the United States IS currently helping independent, Green Party candidates get on the ballots down-ticket for national, state and local elections by obtaining and maintaining ballot access for Green candidates like myself. Obtaining ballot access is a very complicated issue and the requirements for obtaining ballot access is different in every state. In some states, like North Carolina and Oklahoma, the Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party has quite effectively legislated independent parties out of the electoral process by requiring a totally ridiculous numbers of signatures in the many thousands on petitions, in order for an independent or Green Party candidate to get their names on the ballots. The petition signature drives that take place every four years to get Green Party presidential candidates on the ballots nationwide open up ballot access for an entire slate of candidates to get their names on the ballots to run for offices in federal, state and local elections.

TNS: What are your thoughts on the TPP?

Another one of the primary reasons for my decision to run for the U.S. House today is to unseat my Republican opponent, Pat Tiberi, who is the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Tiberi has used his power and position with the House Ways and Means to coerce many Democrats in the House to vote to Fast-Track the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement. I am totally opposed to the TPP because it will sell the American people’s sovereignty over OUR nation down the river to the multinational corporations that own the Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party.  So it is more important than ever to overthrow this evil man Tiberi and the Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party that is representing the good people of Ohio, because the people of Ohio do NOT want to see the TPP signed into law, no matter what corporate owned Pat Tiberi or corporate owned U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) have to say about it. This is also why my Green Party colleague, Joseph DeMare, is running for the United States Senate in Ohio today, in order to unseat Rob Portman, who also supports the TPP.

TNS: What are your thoughts on Citizen United and Hobbly Lobby decisions?

Citizens United and Hobby Lobby are two completely separate issues. With regard to Citizens United v. FEC, I believe that we need an Amendment to the Constitution of the United States to reverse the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision on Citizens United in January of 2010. Citizens United introduced the concept of corporate personhood in America, thereby making bribery legal throughout the American system of government and giving multinational corporations the ability to buy and own the people we elected to represent us in our government through the use of and the influence of the billions of dollars in corporate cash these multinational corporations give the Democratic and Republican candidates running for office as campaign contributions. This is just wrong and this is what has brought the corporate coup d’etat of our government into fruition in 2010. I believe that this YouTube video will help to explain my position on this issue:  Obama: Meet the New Boss

This is where the Green Party of the United States will be able to ensure that we CAN fix this ugly mess that we have on our hands today. The Green Party, and all of the candidates running for office with the Green Party, have taken a pledge to not accept money from businesses and corporations, and we are the only political party in America to do so. We only accept campaign contributions from individual American citizens and we have taken a pledge to only represent the American citizens, and not the special interests of the multinational corporations and their corporate lobbyists that own the Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party.  So basically, the Green Party and Green Party candidates can not be bought, which is very much unlike all of the candidates running for office with the corrupt, corporate-capitalist and corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party.

With regard to Hobby Lobby, I believe that birth control is a medical health care issue and it is a matter of concern between a woman and/or a man and their respective doctor and nobody and no government institution and no corporation should be allowed to interfere with any medical health care issues involving anyone. In my view, medical health care is a basic human right and every medical health care issue is an issue between a person and their health care professional only. Period.

TNS: What is your opinion of the Obama presidency?

Barack Obama is not my president. I am truly ashamed of Barack Obama and how he has scammed the American people with all of that “hope and change” he laid on us. Barack Obama is a corporate owned shill, just like George W. Bush.

TNS: Do you see much difference between Barack Obama and George W. Bush?

No. I see no difference between Barack Obama and George W Bush whatsoever. In my view, they are both evil war mongers and war criminals and they are both corporate owned puppets of the very same multinational corporations that own both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.

TNS: How would the Green New Deal, help the citizens of Ohio?

The Green New Deal will greatly help all of the citizens of the United States equally. It is a plan to end America’s ugly wars for oil by making wars for oil obsolete. We will accomplish this monumental task by enacting new emergency Green legislation that helps to make it affordable for individuals and small cooperative businesses to invest in American manufactured solar and wind power technology. More specifically, this legislation will eliminate the BILLIONS of dollars in American tax subsidies that our out of control American government hands out to multinational oil corporations annually and instead provide a portion of those very same tax subsidies for individuals and small cooperative businesses that invest in American manufactured solar and wind power technology. This new emergency Green legislation will also cut America’s military funding by at least 50% and instead this money will be utilized to help fund the purchase and installation of American manufactured solar and wind power technology, thereby creating millions of new jobs by transitioning to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030. The money previously used to fund the military can also be utilized to fund public transportation in the form of a nationwide, high speed passenger rail transportation network all across America, where we can take our cars and light trucks with us as we travel across North America, similar to the channel tunnel that currently exists between England and France today. An additional major benefit of all of this combined will be the addition of many millions of new, good paying American jobs for Americans. You can read much more about all of this on my website that covers My Platform

TNS: What are your thoughts on making the minimum wage a living wage?

We need to initially increase the minimum wage in America to at least $15.00 per hour as soon as possible.

TNS: Any thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement?

I applaud the Black Lives Matter movement and the attention that they have brought to America about the many injustices that are carried out by America’s militarized police militia today. I believe that we need to completely put an end to the crony capitalism surrounding the American prison industrial complex and we must return control of America’s prison system and America’s police forces to THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, and not the other way around. In my view, America’s police forces absolutely need to be completely demilitarized and they should be required and ordered to “Protect and Serve” and nothing more.

TNS: If elected to congress what types of legislation would you introduce to a) lower healthcare costs b) create jobs c) reduce the influence of the military industrial complex d) rein in wall street e) reduce the influence of the Federal Reserve f) pay off the federal debt?

  1. a) America needs a single-payer health care system. The American people do NOT need health INSURANCE companies. We only need affordable health CARE.
  2. b) The Green Party’s Green New Deal will clearly add millions of new, good paying jobs, as I previously discussed.
  3. c) Once again, as I previously discussed, we need to cut military spending by at least 50%. We need to make it perfectly clear to the military industrial complex that if they want to stay in business, they will have to participate in America’s Green New Deal by changing their business objectives from manufacturing the weapons of war to manufacturing solar and wind power technology that will end American’s dependence on fossil fuels and thereby put an end to America’s ugly wars for oil.
  4. d) The Glass-Steagall Act, or the U.S. Banking Act of 1933 prevented commercial banking institutions from using their deposits to gamble in the stock market. It placed restrictions on securities, activities and affiliations within commercial banks and securities firms and it allowed America to become the economic powerhouse that it became beginning slowly in the 1930s and all through the 1990s. In my view, Bill Clinton set into motion the events which has caused the many economic disasters and the collapse of the American economy when he signed the Gramm-Leach-Biley act into law in 1999. In order to fix this problem and to rein in Wall Street, we need to bring back ALL of the provisions of the U.S. Banking Act of 1933, and not just some of them, in order to bring our economy back to what it should be and to make America great once again.
  5. e) In my view, The Federal Reserve needs to be nationalized and brought under the control of the American people.
  6. f) Ending America’s ugly wars for oil, ending America’s drug wars and the millions of new jobs for Americans brought about through the Green Party’s Green New Deal will all combine and go a long way towards helping to pay off our federal debt.

TNS: What is your position on Israel/Palestine?

I believe that my position on Israel is exactly the same as that of Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein. My view of Israel is that it is an American funded terrorist organization and that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is an evil man who has repeatedly committed war crimes and genocide against many thousands of innocent Palestinian children and civilians and that he should be brought to justice for his crimes. I believe that we need to stop funding the Israeli terrorist regime of Benjamin Netanyahu with BILLIONS of our tax dollars annually.

TNS: How do we strengthen the democratic levers of this republic?

I firmly believe that the only way we can strengthen the democratic levers of this republic is to build a truly independent and strong political party in opposition to the corrupt, corporate-capitalist and corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party cabal that is in power in Washington today. This is also one more reason why I am running as a Green Party candidate for Congress today.

TNS: Do you think we need some kind of political revolution in this country?

Yes. Absolutely. But we will never see any sort of political revolution as long as the status quo of the corrupt, corporate-capitalist and corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party is involved with it. Bernie Sanders talks a good talk when he speaks of bringing about a political revolution in America. But I find what Sanders is doing today is disingenuous and I only see him scamming the American people with more of the same, old “hope and change” that Obama laid on us. Sanders is a war monger, and his voting record in Congress of funding America’s ugly wars for oil and funding the Lockheed Martin F35 Joint Strike Fighter proves beyond the shadow of any doubt whatsoever that he is indeed a war monger, just like George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Sanders has no plans to end Obama’s ugly drone warfare program and he has stated that he would continue it if elected as president. This is completely out of line with the Green Party’s platform of nonviolence and diplomacy, and the only thing that I can see out of a Sanders presidency is more of the same, only more wars for oil, and what sort of political revolution is that? It’s only more of the same, only more of the status quo. So my view of the Democratic Party is that it is the enemy of any form of political revolution and it will only squash a revolution with the billions of dollars in corporate cash that it has on hand, along with all of our tax dollars. My view of the Democratic Party is that it is the enemy of the American people, as well as the Green Party, just like the Republican Party, and you can NOT fight your enemy and bring about a political revolution by joining your enemy. You MUST build an opposing force against your enemy, and that’s what the Green Party of the United States is doing today. We are the opposing force against the corrupt, corporate-capitalist and corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party cabal of evil and greed and wars for oil and we want to bring a REAL political revolution to America, and not the sort of fake political revolution that Sanders is talking about within the Democratic Party. What Sanders is talking about just isn’t going to work. In my view, what Sanders is talking about is a scam, just like Obama scammed everyone with his talk of “hope and change”.

TNS: How do we create/build/expand people power or a people’s movement?

I truly believe that it is possible for the American people to bring about a real political revolution and build a people’s movement by completely abandoning the evil and corrupt, corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party and joining the Green Party of the United States, so that we can finally take our country and our government back from the multinational corporations that have stolen it all away from us. This is what Dr. Jill Stein’s Power to the People Plan is all about and I encourage everyone to visit her website and learn all about it.

TNS: How do we make every vote count?

If I had my way, I would make EVERY vote count by completely eliminating ALL of the electronic voting machines throughout America and bring back paper ballots. In my view, there has been far too much evidence of election fraud and the hacking of our electronic voting machines to allow this to continue. There are just too many ways that electronic voting machines can be hacked. The only way that I can see to fix this problem is to get rid of it and go back to what we know works, and that is the old-school paper ballots that we previously used.

TNS: Win or lose, what do you expect to accomplish with your campaign?

Let me make this perfectly clear: I expect to win.  My Republican opponent supports the TPP and he voted to Fast-Track it through Congress. I expect my Democratic opponent to do likewise, just as our Democratic president and most of the Democrats in Congress today fully support the TPP. In all of my conversations with the people I have spoken with in my voting district, not one of them who actually know what this secretive TPP deal is all about has said that they support the passage of the TPP.  So at this point, it appears that there is no other option available to stop the TPP except by voting for all of the Green Party candidates running for office today.  But in the off-chance that I lose the election, at least I will have enlightened a portion of the American people about the truly ugly events that are taking place in Washington today and I have informed them about the Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party in power in Washington that is currently driving our country off the road and deep into the ditch of fascism, oligarchy and plutocracy and onto the path to World War III.

TNS: How do we build a political party that is of, and by the people going forward?

Exactly as I have previously stated. Abandon the corrupt, corporate-capitalist and corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party and join the Green Party, which is owned by the American people who support the Green Party candidates with their campaign contributions and their votes.

TNS: Where do you see the Green Party in five years?

If we can get some Green Party candidates elected to Congress this year and get Dr. Jill Stein in The White House, I can see the Green Party of the United States becoming one of the two mainstream political parties in America, replacing the Republican Party and putting the Republican Party into obscurity, similar to what happened to the Whig Party when Abraham Lincoln was elected president as a Republican in 1861. This is how the political revolution in America will be born. This is how the American people will be able to take our country and our government away from the multinational corporations that have stolen it from us. If the American people can help us bring this real political revolution into fruition by voting Green this year and joining the Green Party, there is no doubt that the Green Party will be one of the two mainstream political parties in America in five years.

TNS: Is there room in American politics for several third or independent political parties?

Yes. Absolutely.  I have a lot of respect for all of the people in the Veterans’ Party of America, which is a another left-wing, constitutional political party that has a political platform very much like that of the Green Party of the United States, and I would like to see that political party come into power in America also. The Libertarian Party is a right-wing independent political party that had David Koch and Charles Koch among their founders in the 1970s. If the Republican Party recedes into relative obscurity, as I have previously described, I can see the Libertarian Party rising to power in the United States, especially if the Koch brothers continue funding Libertarian Party think tanks, like the Cato Institute.

TNS: How would you summarize your political philosophy or ideology?

Well, I think that I have already given you enough insight on me to answer that question. But to sum it all up, I would have to say that I am an extremely left-leaning, environmentally conscious and optimistic radical working to help bring about a radical change for the betterment of America and the rest of the world.

TNS: What advice would you give young people just becoming politically aware?

I would tell them to get involved. I would suggest that they seek out their state and local Green Party organizations and get involved with petition signature drives and help Green Party candidates get on the ballots. I would also suggest that they run for office themselves, if they would like to help bring about positive, progressive change in America, in order to help make the world a better place.

TNS: You quote Lincoln and Jefferson in your campaign writings, what do you think they would say about the United States of 2016?

I believe that Thomas Jefferson would be angry and he would be scolding us today because we have allowed our government to fall into the hands of moneyed, multinational corporations, exactly as he spoke of two hundred years ago in 1816. I also believe that Abraham Lincoln would be encouraging everyone in America to join the Green Party of the United States because it is clearly the only option available today to overthrow the men and women in the Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party that have perverted the Constitution of the United States and handed our government off to the moneyed, multinational corporations that Thomas Jefferson spoke of in 1816.

Joe Manchik, thank you for your time. Good luck with your campaign.

Thank you, Jim. I appreciate the opportunity to respond to your questions.

I am unable to find information about the following question: Is or is not the Green Party for the immediate, unconditional withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Afghanistan and Iraq. I work with veterans and members of the armed forces in favor of that position. It is not negotiable, and no candidate will receive support who is favor of more dead U.S. troops, or is conveniently silent on the question. Where is the position of the Green Party posted?

Joe Manchik March 14, 2016 at 8:59 pm

I would certainly favor the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Afghanistan and Iraq, Thomas. Sadly, the United States started the ugly war in Iraq so that multinational oil corporations can steal the oil and the gas in Iraq and America’s ugly war on drugs in Afghanistan drags on today primarily to provide multinational drug corporations with the ability to steal the natural resources from the people in that sovereign nation. If U.S. troops just pick-up and leave, that will leave a power vacuum in the region for American funded terrorist organizations like ISIL and ISIS to move in and take over the oil, gas and drug resources. We need to first find a way to stabilize the entire region and then return the ownership and the control over these resources to the people in the region once again before U.S. troops can entirely leave this region with a lasting peace. Cutting the funding for our military by at least 50% will help to speed-up this process and I believe that we should be able to accomplished this monumental task within two or three years. We also need to IMMEDIATELY get American troops out of Syria and allow Bashar al-Assad to rule and control HIS sovereign nation because the United States certainly has no business whatsoever attempting to overthrow the Syrian government.

Curtis Hansoni March 14, 2016 at 11:01 pm

Joe, I personally am all about the US getting out of every foreign intervention, immediately. But to say Syria is Assad’s (HIS?) sovereign nation ignores that the people revolted before the ISIS incursion happened, and it wasn’t all CIA plotting against Assad. Syrians were sick of Assad’s shit, and it’s their right to remove him without interference from other nations/outside forces, although good luck getting that. And Rojava — Syrian Kurdistan — has for many years rejected all outside control and the notion of the state entirely.

If you oppose imperialism it might be helpful to watch the implicit imperialism of assuming Assad is what Syrians want, or even assuming statism is what Syrians want.

Joe Manchik March 15, 2016 at 11:26 am

That’s right, Curtis. Syria is indeed a sovereign nation and it is certainly NOT part of the United States of America and American military forces have absolutely no right whatsoever to be in Syria no matter what Bashar al-Assad does in Syria. The ONLY reason our corrupt, corporate owned and out of control American government is attempting to overthrow the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad is so that the multinational oil corporations and the multinational military industrial contractors running our out of control American government in Washington can get more BILLIONS of OUR tax dollars to finance and manufacture the weapons of war for this conflict in Syria and more BILLIONS of petrodollars by stealing the oil and the gas in Syria.

“no longer represent the American people”

On the contrary, they represent the same “American people” they always have: the capitalist class.

The lack of even this sort of rudimentary understanding of class and the state clearly demonstrates why militant workers should not give one ounce of support to the petty bourgeois Greens.

Reply

Joe Manchik May 2, 2016 at 2:39 pm

Wrong, Rocko. The corrupt, corporate OWNED Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party cabal of evil and greed and wars for oil only represents the multinational corporations that own it, NOT the American people. These are the multinational military industrial contractors that get BILLIONS of OUR tax dollars to finance and manufacture the weapons of war and multinational oil corporations that get BILLIONS of petrodollars by stealing the oil and the gas from the innocent victims of the nations that the United States occupies. Nothing will ever change in America if Americans continue to support this duopoly cabal of evil and greed and wars for oil and continue to vote for the corporate owned Democratic-Republican Duopoly Party war mongers and corporate stooges that are running our country off the road and deep into the ditch of fascism, oligarchy and plutocracy and onto the path to World War III. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result, and what you are proposing sounds like pure insanity to me, Roco.

There is no “American people.”

There are people living in America who are divided into different classes.

The state is a bourgeois body. The parties that take turns administering the state are bourgeois parties. The represent the bourgeoisie, which makes up less than 1% of the people living in America. The Democrats and Republicans were formed as bourgeois organizations, and they will remain so for as long as they exist. They have never represented working people.

What’s needed is a party of the working class people not only in America, but worldwide. Such a party would not waste time with bourgeois elections. It would work towards the abolition of the bourgeois state and the creation of a worker run society.

The party of the working class in America is CLEARLY the Green Party of the United States and it is also clearly the party for the working class worldwide too.

The Green Party is clearly a petty bourgeois party that disappears the working class into an amorphous “American people”.

Workers have nothing to gain at the ballot box. The state must be smashed.

Reply

Joe Manchik May 3, 2016 at 10:29 am

Then how would you propose smashing the state, Cliff? Perhaps riots in the streets all across America? Is that what you want you and your children to see happening in America?

Bernie Sanders had the right idea when he began preaching last year that we need a peaceful political revolution in America. The only problem with Sanders is that he sold out to the corrupt, corporate owned Progressive Democrats of America PAC and their corporate cash from the multinational corporations that own the Democratic Party of evil and greed and wars for oil. If Sanders would have joined the Green Party, instead of selling out, he really could have started a political revolution in America. But sadly, the DNC and their corporate owned superdelegates will soon throw Bernie under the bus at their nominating convention, in order to make the United States of America into a total fascist, oligarchic plutocracy by putting Bill and Hillary Clinton back into The White House once again. Sadly, Bernie’s political revolution will go absolutely nowhere within the corrupt, corporate owned Democratic Party with their BILLIONS in corporate cash. But the Green Party of the United States is NOT corporate owned and we would like to see this peaceful political revolution continue. That is what we are all about.
