Socialism at the Ballot Box

by Ben Campbell on January 18, 2014

This discussion took place on Jan. 16, 2014 at the Brecht Forum in New York City. Following the election of the Socialist Alternative candidate Kshama Sawant to Seattle City Council, the subject of the discussion was socialism and electoral politics.

Alan Akrivos is a member of Socialist Alternative. Jen Roesch is a member and New York City organizer for the International Socialist Organization. Bhaskar Sunkara is the editor and publisher of Jacobin magazine, and an editor of In These Times. John Halle is a former Green Party alderman in New Haven, CT.

An interesting and timely discussion. Just to see members of three distinct tendencies engaged in polite dialog was refereshing in itself.

I wouldn’t trust anything out of Bhaskar Sunkara’s mouth. I have already heard from two different writers that he makes promises to publish them and then ditches his word. Not a very promising contributor to any Socialist much less credible.

It is almost unachievable to find perfectly-informed men and women in this
distinct subject matter, on the other hand, you look like you know what you’re talking about!
