Shut Down Greek Nazis in NYC

by The North Star on October 4, 2012

Golden Dawn, G.D. (in Greek, Chrysi Avgi), the neo-Nazi, ultra-nationalistic party, which was recently elected to the Greek Parliament under the pretext of concern over unemployment, austerity and the economy, and while engaging in virulent anti-immigrant rhetoric and anti-democratic, nationalistic activities, has now established a chapter in New York City. Several groups and organizations have already publicly expressed their outrage and have called for immediate action.

For over 30 years, G.D. has operated from the margins of the far right political spectrum using the symbols, practices and methods of a racist, anti-democratic and intolerant neo-Nazi ideology. The recent economic crisis, however, has brought them to the forefront of political developments. They recently drew the attention of the international media, when one of their Parliament members physically attacked two women from Left wing parties on live television. Before that incident and since, G.D. thugs have organized murderous attacks against immigrants, left wingers, gays as well as anyone who will stand in their way.

Greek Golden Dawn MP Attacks Another MP Live: Kasidiaris Slaps Kanelli
G.D. harbors common criminals. In the 70s, the “Fuhrer,” as they honorably call their leader, was imprisoned for setting off bombs in cinemas that showed films of Soviet production. Around the same period, members of the organization were also prosecuted for committing acts of terrorism against left wing newspapers and organizations. Today, they exhibit particular disdain against Muslims while they also openly deny the Holocaust.

In New York City, G.D. masquerades as a philanthropic organization conducting food and clothing drives. The goal of such activities is to popularize G.D.’s neo-Nazi ideology and enlist public sympathy. G.D.’s ‘philanthropic’ activity is a cynical ploy and has to be condemned as such.

Alternatively, “Doctors of the World,” “AHEPA,” and a number of other international or community-based NGOs rely on our help to support the Greek people. We urge all who wish to do so to support legitimate charities and Greek solidarity groups, and reject Golden Dawn’s advances.

History teaches us that economic crises can breed hatred, racism and ultimately fascism. Capitalism divides us along social, cultural and political lines so as to dominate us more effectively. Few cities in the world other than New York know this better. We therefore invite immigrant organizations, unions, teachers’ associations and cultural organizations to an open meeting where we can freely discuss and decide how we can effectively act against racism, violence and fascism.

Say NO to fascism!

Say NO to racism!

this post is pathetically under-reaching. The only reason GD even has an ear in the U.S. is because of its increasing popularity in Greece as a pole of attraction pandering to the frustrations of increasingly lumpenized sections of the Greek working class alongside the right-leaning petit bourgeois and ruling class elements of Greek society. The Greek workers require much Better solidarity than for us to say “not on our shores” as if somehow workers and the oppressed are immune to fascist-like solutions under the world economic crisis.

The Greek workers and their organizations like Syriza MUST GET A VOICE and we need to give them one here in the U.S. Syriza must be allowed to speak to the Greek community and to workers and oppressed peoples in U.S. Occupy Wall Street needs to provide a way for the legitimate voices of the Greek workers and oppressed to come to the U.S., speak, and win solidarity directly. It is absolutely true that we must provide solidarity to the Greek people in their time of crisis under the capitalist yoke. If we don’t THINK about how to do this, No One will. I can understand how Obama had no “game” in his bickering with the rightist Romney; he has no game and Romney is just a liar. I Do Not Understand how when Greek workers stand on the very precipice that resulted in what happened to Nazi Germany, that all we can think of to do is to shout ineffectual slogans about “no to fascism, no to racism”?! Seriously?

We can begin by showing the way to democracy by organizing speaking tours by Syriza and/or Greek workers organizations, arranging influence in the left media like Alternet, Democracy Now, and others to discuss the real issues of austerity and how the European banks are holding the economy hostage to the wealth of their ruling classes–something that can easily be connected to how U.S. workers are experiencing the same. Rather than dream up “good” transitional demands, we should raise real counter demands being raised by the conscious layers of the Greek working class. In this way, the Greek media, but most important, the Greek people will SEE our real solidarity and not just some good excuse for us to gain left traction in the U.S.
Let’s find a better way to organize and truly stand with the Greek workers. Now!

This is the text of a flyer announcing an organizing meeting. How is that “pathetically under-reaching”?

The article plus the first comment cover me.I only want to say that it is a pity that in greece this fascists are still free to walk around.Nazism is not an ideology ,it is a crime against humanity ,and has been judged as such from the civilised world. There should be no room for the criminals who have managed to trick their way in parliament in greece. This is a coup d etat,it is a take over of all goverment, actually not taking it over but dismantling it with the assistance of the right party and the socialists(only by name) PASOK,and the DIMAR ,this party that poses as left but in reality is puppet party of the right wing.
Do you want to help the Greek people, the simple hard working people? Then demand from your goverment(which i assume works better than the Greek one) to ban the neonazis from the social life, and politics. These guys are criminals ,with convictions for rape, assaults, even murder, but they manage to escape with the excuse of being voted in parliament.Even during the elections some of the “politicians” of the nazi party Golden dawn were wanted by the police and in hiding.they managed to escape arrest all the pre election period ,with the assistance of the police (which apparently has been filled with fascist elements ,who terrorise the rest into assaulting citizens and covering up any golden dawn foul. This is the reason why every day all around greece we get racial attacks against immigrants, anyone who is dark skin is in danger 24-7.and even greeks who tried to defend the foreigners got beaten and sent to the hospital by the neonazis. So if the society you want to live in ,does not include violence, racism and the like, you have to act now!demand the imprisonment of the nazis.now before its too late, before yuou find yourself in a society like prewar germany under adolf hitler….except if thats what you d like for you and your children.

Whats with the photo ID? If its a precaution against disruption surely it would still be necessary to organize physical protection. Encouraging people to submit themselves to political surveillance is wrong.
